  •   Fossil Toys

I've been designing a set of toy figurines based on my favorite fossil creatures. They are currently manufactured for a decent price by 3D printing over at Shapeways, where you can order copies for yourself or for your favorite paleontology buff.

The first fossil in this series is Wiwaxia corrugata, an armored bottom-feeding animal from 450 million years ago. The evolutionary relationship of this animal is under continuing debate, but my prefered interpretation of the fossil evidence is that it is a mollusc (essentially an armored slug). There are no currently living creatures which have the same sort of charismatic armor as Wiwaxia, although the polychete worm Aphrodita comes close.

The first version of this creature captures the armor plating of the creature, which is missing from the toys based on this species which I've come across. You can order this either in polished white nylon or stainless steel (with a few options for surface finish) here : http://www.shapeways.com/model/273679/. I use the metal one as a (somewhat expensive) paperweight for my office.

The second version of this creature captures the armor as in the first version, as well as the vertical defensive spines which are so characteristic of the species. You can order this in polished white nylon here : http://www.shapeways.com/model/348703/. This version is not available in steel because the vertical spines are too thin for the metal printing process to work reliably.
